Hot off the press, FlyFishing in Saltwater just printed a "Behind the Scenes" feature on the Origin of the Sky Project!
The Sian Ka’an Biosphere is on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula just north of the Belizean border. Sian Ka’an, in the original Mayan Indian language, means birthplace or origin of the sky. Well known to fly fisherman, it’s home to the famous Casa Blanca Fly Fishing Lodge and some of the best permit fishing there is. During a trip there in 2011 as a guest of my good friend and Sunbrella Fabrics CEO Allen Gant, I fell in love with the place. Gant is a passionate fly fisherman and conservationist and enjoyed being part of my efforts to photograph bonefish and permit free swimming and unhooked on the flats of the northern part of the reserve, Ascension Bay. Several weeks after we’d returned to North Carolina, I joined Allen for lunch.. As we discussed the Yucatan, he suggested that he would like to see a film made about the Sian Ka’an and its giant bays of Espiritos Santos and Ascension. His company, Sunbrella, was looking for an opportunity to be part of a project that met their values regarding the environment. As the premier manufacturer of outdoor fabrics,the association with a marine wildlife documentary like this was perfect. He asked if I would be interested in shooting the film….
